2016 tested my limits yet it also forced me to take the leap and step into my destiny. Powerful stuff, yet so freaking scary. Needless to say I was pretty happy to close that chapter and head into 2017 with a clean slate.
I woke up to a text asking if I could help a friend out and feed the horses this morning. There was quite the snowstorm overnight, leaving around a foot of snow on the ground. I felt a moment of dismay. The thought of venturing out and having a couple of hours of shovelling before I could even get out of my driveway, not to mention navigating snow covered highways and deep drifts on the side roads didn’t exactly start my day (or year) on a happy note.
I decided that caffeine was my first priority. As I sipped my coffee, I could hear the sound of a snowblower outside. By the time I headed out the door, shovel in hand, I looked out only to see that my driveway and sidewalk were completely cleared.
A wave of gratitude washed over me and wiped away any residual frustration that I was feeling. My neighbors are so wonderful. Because they know that I am on my own, they have a tendency to watch out for me. I stopped to thank my snow angel for his help and we chatted for a while. With a New Years hug and a smile, he was on his way.
Winter driving has never been my favorite thing even though I am a pretty competent driver. It’s not the roads themselves but the other drivers that you have to watch out for. Driving in this stuff is not for the faint of heart and I actually threw a shovel in the back of my Infiniti in case I needed to dig myself or someone else out of the snow.
Off I went, navigating the drifts, thankful for my four wheel drive. Another wave of gratitude washed over me as I remembered the generosity of my dear friend who repaired it free of charge so I would be safe this winter.
Feeding the horses involves loading bales on the back of a rhino, which is a four wheel drive utility vehicle. It is pretty decent in the snow but there were some 2-3 foot drifts in my path. Rather than taking the risk of getting stuck, I pulled in as far as I could go and carried the horses’ feed in by hand. Again, more gratitude because I was getting a good, honest workout and was able to personally check on the wellbeing of all of the horses. I always worry about them when the weather is bad even though they are well equipped to handle it.
If there is one takeaway from my day, it is how blessed I am to live the life that I do with the people and creatures who surround me with their love and care.
